Personalization shows blank or fallback values

Fix merge fields that render empty or default text so each subscriber sees the right content.

Symptom

A personalization tag in your Edition renders as an empty space, or every subscriber sees the same generic fallback text (for example "Hi there," instead of "Hi Sam,"). The problem often appears only in the preview for certain subscribers, or only after the Broadcast has gone out.

Likely causes

Ranked from most to least common:

  • The subscriber field is empty for some or all subscribers, so the tag falls back to its default value (or to nothing).
  • The tag name doesn't match the field name — a typo, extra space, or different capitalization than the field in your audience data.
  • You're previewing as a test/seed address that has no data in that field, so what you see isn't representative of real subscribers.
  • The field exists but wasn't populated on import — the column was blank or mismatched when the list was uploaded or synced.
  • A default/fallback value is configured on the tag and is doing its job because the real value is missing.

Fixes

  1. Preview as a real subscriber. Use the preview tool to render the Edition as a specific subscriber who you know has data, rather than a seed address. If that subscriber renders correctly, the issue is missing data, not the tag. (Confirm the exact preview steps in your account.)
  2. Check the exact tag spelling. Insert the tag from the personalization menu instead of typing it, so the name matches your field exactly — including capitalization and no stray spaces.
  3. Inspect the field data. Open your audience/list and check whether the field is populated for the affected subscribers. Filter or search for blank values to gauge how many are missing.
  4. Set a sensible fallback. For fields that are legitimately blank for some subscribers, add a fallback value so the copy still reads naturally (for example, "there" as a first-name fallback).
  5. Re-import or update missing values. If many subscribers are missing data, re-upload the list with the correct column mapping, or update the field via your integration/sync.
  6. Send a seed test before the Broadcast. Send a test to addresses that mirror real subscriber data and confirm every tag resolves as expected.

Still stuck?

If tags still render blank after confirming the field is populated and the tag name matches, capture a screenshot of the preview, note the affected subscriber and tag name, and contact your account's support team so they can review the field mapping on the back end.
