Build a dynamic list (segment) with targeting rules
A dynamic list (segment) is defined by rules rather than a fixed set of names. Instead of adding subscribers by hand, you describe the conditions a subscriber must meet — and membership updates automatically as your data changes. This keeps your targeting current between Broadcasts without ongoing manual upkeep.
Before you begin
- Confirm the subscriber fields you want to target (for example, region, job role, product interest, or a signup date) are actually populated for your audience. Rules can only match on data you store.
- Decide whether membership should require all conditions to match or any of them — this maps to AND vs. OR logic.
- Make sure you have permission to create or edit lists in your account (confirm the exact steps in your account).
Steps
- Open the Audiences area and choose to create a new list, selecting the dynamic (rule-based) type rather than a static/uploaded list.
- Give the list a clear, descriptive name so its purpose is obvious later (for example, "West region — active in last 90 days").
- Add your first rule by selecting a field, an operator (equals, contains, greater than, is not empty, and so on), and a value to compare against.
- Add more rules as needed, and set whether subscribers must match all rules or any rule. Use grouping to combine AND/OR logic where the interface supports it.
- Preview the matching subscribers to sanity-check the count and confirm the right people are included.
- Save the list.
Result
The list now shows a live count of matching subscribers and refreshes automatically as subscriber data is updated or imported. You can select it as the audience when you send a Broadcast, and its membership will reflect the rules at send time.
