Edit and organize custom fields

Custom fields hold the subscriber data you collect and use for targeting and personalization — things like first name, region, plan tier, or renewal date. Over time these fields accumulate, get inconsistent labels, or fall out of use. This guide covers renaming, reordering, and retiring fields so your subscriber data stays clean and predictable.

Before you begin

  • Confirm you have permission to manage subscriber fields for your account (usually an admin-level role).
  • Know how each field is used before you change it: fields feed personalization tags, signup forms, imports, and audience filters.
  • Note that a field's underlying key (the token you personalize with) may differ from its display label. Renaming the label usually does not change the key. (confirm the exact steps in your account)

Steps

  1. Open your audience settings and find the list of custom fields.
  2. To rename a field, edit its display label. Keep the underlying field key stable so existing personalization tags and imports keep working.
  3. To reorder fields, drag them into the sequence you want, or set a position value. This controls the order shown on forms and in the subscriber profile.
  4. To clean up an unused field, first check whether it is referenced by any signup form, personalization tag, or audience filter. Remove those references, then archive or delete the field.
  5. Save your changes and review the updated field list.

Result

Your custom fields have clear, consistent labels in a sensible order, and any obsolete fields are archived or removed. Existing personalization and imports continue to resolve because the field keys were preserved.
